May 2009 Alice Sloan Trust has now entered its 4th year of growth. Our progress has been gentle and continues to advance due to the strong love, support and commitment of so many, in so many different ways. We continue to operate under the umbrella of the Melbourne Community Foundation and have forged successful partnerships with the Outdoor Education Group, Berry Street Victoria, Alexandra Secondary College and as always, we have a strong bond with Toorak College. The ‘Walks of Life’ fund raising and awareness campaign for the Alice Sloan Trust has continued to increase in size and with continued involvement, we hope to spread the activity further with every passing year. A “Walks of Life” card is included for you to share with your friends and loved ones. As we approach Alice’s birthdate and the annual ‘Walks of Life’ event, we wish to take this opportunity to share with you the various activities and progress of the Trust. In the past 12 months the following activities have taken place – The Alice Sloan Expedition The Alice Sloan Expedition continues to be the main focus of grants made by the Trust. The 3rd Annual Alice Sloan Expedition took place in January 2009 when seven students from Alexandra Secondary College participated in a 10 day Expedition in the Lake Eildon National Park and surrounds. Appointment of the Alice Sloan Project Co-ordinator Berry Street Victoria has appointed Jenny McKenzie as the Alice Sloan Trust Project Co-ordinator to a permanent, two days per week position. Jenny’s role, and the partnership between the Trust and Berry Street, has facilitated the planning and future expansion of the Expedition, as well as the development of the Alice Sloan Youth Leadership Award. The Alice Sloan Youth Leadership Award The Youth Leadership Award is currently under development as a recognized TAFE-level certificate and, in future years, will be available to girls who participate in the Expedition. In the meantime, opportunities for public speaking training are provided and a number of the 2008 students participated in The Australian Youth Leadership Conference. Toorak College Alice Sloan Trust Committee The Toorak College Alice Sloan Trust Student Committee is now in its 3rd year and these Year 10 students are involved in both fund raising and volunteer work in the local community. Women’s Luncheon The biennial Alice Sloan Trust Women’s Luncheon was held in October 2008 at Toorak College. Guest speakers, including the 2008 Expedition participants, told of the diversity of challenges and benefits of outdoor education. We also heard about the role of the Melbourne Community Foundation in the support of our Trust. Support for the Alice Sloan Trust We thank the many individuals and organisations who have continued to support the Trust through organising activities, giving awards and the raising and donation of funds. Some of the organisations who have held events for the Trust in support and recognition of Alice and the Trust established in her name include:
Some of the organisations who honour us with scholarships or awards in Alice’s name include Toorak College, Mornington Peninsula Netball Association, Kumon Mt.Eliza and Mt. Martha School of Dance. The Alice Sloan Trust continues to grow and our family and friends are a great source of inspiration and encouragement. We invite further ideas and suggestions, offers of help and advice. At this point, I would like to personally thank you for all that has been shared with the Trust, our family, and of course Alice.
The Alice Sloan Trust is gently growing and we are exploring our involvement in aspects of activities that Alice loved and enjoyed. Continued financial donations and emotional support from family and friends helps to raise awareness of the Trust and all its endeavors. The Alice Sloan Trust gives thanks to everyone for the ongoing support, encouragement and faith in all we do.
